The Chernobyl disaster 29 years after

April 26, 2015 were 29 years after the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which went down in the history of Ukraine as one of the worst tragedies, which consequences will affect the lives of more than one generation of people around the world.

At night of April 26, at 00.23 Yuriy Sapiga, Teams of Green Cross Ukraine and Green Cross Belarus, as well as visitors, volunteers, members of the Forum, liquidators and residents laid flowers at the memorial to the Heroes of Chernobyl. Thus, they expressed their solidarity and respect to liquidators, who gave their lives during the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant for the sake of humanity.

According to scientists, as well as international organizations in the accident about 60 000 liquidators were killed, about 165 000 were invalided, and more than 10 000 cases of congenital abnormalities and more than 10 000 cases of thyroid cancer were registered in Europe.

Health care and safety of people, who live in the third and fourth Chernobyl zones, require constant monitoring and surveillance. Green Cross has been helping them for many years and in such a way contributes to solving of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant by implementing the International Program SOCMED, which is aimed to help people, who live in the affected areas. Solving the problems of Chernobyl is very important till today.

Green Cross Ukraine is assisting the population, who is still suffering from the diseases and pathologies, caused by the influence of radiation, and are in need of help and support.

This year Green Cross also took part in the events related to the 29th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident, visited the ongoing projects, involved families, an orphanage in the city of Slavutych, met with veterans, the liquidators of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, made a trip to the exclusion zone, visited Chernobyl, Pripyat, and also familiarized with the stages of construction of a new safe confinement, which is planned to be completed by the year 2017.

This year Green Cross Belarus also took part in all the scheduled annual events and in the International Youth Ecological Forum.

Administration of the Slavutych city, together with Green Cross Ukraine held the X anniversary International Youth Ecological Forum.

The Forum was opened by the national anthem of Ukraine. Tatiana Boyko said welcoming remarks and wished all the participants and guests productive work. Vasiliy Nechepa, People's Artist of Ukraine, also was present and welcomed the participants of the Forum by music.

Acting Mayor of Slavutych Yuriy Fomichev, as well as all the Slavutych City Administration, liquidators, all residents expressed their gratitude to Green Cross, as well as the SOCMED Team for long-term cooperation and assistance in solving of social issues in the city of Slavutich, and nearby villages.

Vladimir Udovychenko, former mayor of Slavutych, welcomed all the participants of the Forum, and expressed his gratitude to the organizers, who, successfully implement joint with Green Cross such events for the past ten years. Former mayor of Slavutych offered the initiative for the organization of the XI International Youth Ecological Forum, which will be devoted to 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

Chairman of the Board, Executive Director of Green Cross Ukraine, Yuriy Sapiga made a speech and talked about the activities of Green Cross, and conveyed greetings from Maria Vitagliano, Director of International Program SOCMED (GCCH).

At the Forum academics and journalists, representatives of youth environmental organizations from Poland, Belarus, Japan, the students of the leading educational institutions of Ukraine made their speeches. Speeches and reports, which were performed during the Forum, showed the vision and possible solutions of environmental problems related to the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

Thanks to the International Youth Ecological Forum all participants had the opportunity to increase their awareness of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, get a unique experience as well as exchange ideas on solving ecological problems in Ukraine and over the world.

Also, in these days the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko visited the nuclear power plant. The President expressed his condolences to the families of the victims in the aftermath of the Chernobyl explosion and expressed the hope that the international community will help Ukraine to complete the construction of the sarcophagus over the destroyed reactor of nuclear power plant and said: "Chernobyl is a great human tragedy, the epicenter of which remains on the Ukrainian territory. Joint cooperation of the world community, will undoubtedly help to overcome the difficulties and problems of the Chernobyl disaster. Our common goal is to create and to maintain safe, environmentally sustainable and bright future for the next generations".
