GCU and SOCMED Program in Ukraine

Green Cross Ukraine (GCU) continues to implement its activities, providing assistance to the most vulnerable strata of population. Since the beginning of 2012, business visits were held to the regions, the organization signed cooperation agreement with the National Ecology and Nature Center of Ukraine. Through the assistance of the partners from Switzerland it continues to realize the following projects within International Program SOCMED: Eco Summer Therapy Camp, International Eco Camp, Caries Prevention, Health for the Future, GCU Mother and Child Clubs, Social Cooperatives, Training for Trainers. School of Volunteer, Education, Information and Publication.

In January Green Cross Ukraine participated in developing of the Concept Note to get EU grant for realization of the joint cross-border project of three countries (Romania-Ukraine-Republic of Moldova) on water supply, sewerage and waste management. In this regard, Green Cross Ukraine collected the data, studied the water supply and sewage treatment problem of Teplodar town, Odessa region. Jan. 23-24 Yuriy Sapiga, GCU Chairman of the Board was on his business trip to Teplodar town. He met there with local authorities, mayor of the town – Leonid Pechersky, learned the problem directly on the site. Possible solution approaches and depollution were discussed. The project on sewerage and change of waste treatment facilities in Nadlymanske village, Odessa region, is being working out.

At the beginning of February 2012 Green Cross Ukraine accepted the GCI’s proposal to participate in Green Cross family photo exhibition that will take place in September 2012-2013 in Geneva. GCU team prepared and sent photos of the projects that through support and assistance of the Swiss partners being implemented within International SOCMED program in Ukraine.

Within Education, Information and Publication project we prepared the article for Parostok magazine that is issued in the first quarter of 2012. We prepared informative story and photos about Green Cross charitable activities and work of VIETCOT based on materials collected by GCU Executive Director in autumn 2011 during his business visit organized with the help of our GCCH partners, Maria Vitagliano International Program Director Social and Medical Care and Thuy Pham SOCMED Program Coordinator.

Today we do preliminary arrangements for organization of Eco Summer Therapy Camp for children affected by the Chernobyl accident. In this regard, GCU announced about the conduction of the children's drawing contest on environmental issues called "Children for Cleaner Future." The winners will receive a gift voucher to improve their health in the therapy camp that Green Cross Ukraine holds every year with the assistance of Green Cross Switzerland  in ecologically clean region of Ukraine - on the basis of Polonyna therapeutic complex located in Lumshory village, Perechynsky region, Transcarpathian oblast’.

We continue our activity in GCU Mother and Child Clubs in the regions: lawyers, psychologists, pedagogues and social workers provide their consultations to large and foster families, as well as people who live in contaminated territories, affected by the Chernobyl accident. The volunteers are involved in the activity of GCU Clubs. They work with disabled children and children from orphanages. The members of GCU Mother and Child Club participate in municipal programs. We monitor ecological and social situation.

We invite all interested people, organizations and foundations to cooperate in order to develop organization’s activity, implement the projects aimed at providing medical and social care.
