Smart Water for Green Schools in Ukraine

In January 2013 a new project “Smart Water for Green Schools" under coordination of Green Cross International was launched in Nevgody village, Ovruch region, Zhytomyr oblast to provide the residents of Nevgody village with the access to safe water and sanitation and increase environmental awareness of the local communities.
There are 157 households in Nevgody village inhabited by 403 people, including 71 children aged to 17, and 8 large families. The distinctive feature of the Nevgody village is that it was founded after the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant in order to provide housing to the people evacuated from Chernobyl. Existing water treatment facilities cannot perform their initial functions. As a result, water remains of poor quality.
Through the repair and implementation of water supply system we plan to provide residents of Nevgody village with clean water and thus improve their health.
The support of Green Cross International (GCI), International Forum Committee (IFC) and World Water Counci (WWC), whose main principle is the protection of fundamental human right to the access to clean safe water, enabled the implementation of the project.
Duration of the project is seven months (from January to July 2013) and during this period it is planned to reconstruct water treatment facilities of Nevgody village and supply of households with a rehabilitated water network. The project also provides the construction of dry toilets in the communal school as well as medical consultations, educational activities and workshops for the students and inhabitants of Nevgody on water, sanitation, hygienic practices and integrated approaches of water, sanitation and livelihood.
The project got an active support from the local authorities – Mykola Levkivsky, head of Ovruch Regional State Administration, Mykola Haychuk, first deputy of the head of Administration, Anatoliy Bibko, deputy of the head of the Administration, as well as Anatoliy Demydchuk, head of Nevgody village council. They are willing and ready to participate in organization and implementation of works under the project within joint activity.
Through the implementation of this project residents of Nevgody will be able to get access to safe-drinking water, improve their health, increase environmental awareness, receive necessary medical consultations, become informed about water and sanitation issues and share their experience and obtained knowledge with others.
We invite all interested to cooperate in our joint project! Using new possibilities and expanding the circle of mutual support we will be able to develop our programs and projects aimed at providing assistance.
