Visit, devoted to the 25th Anniversary of Chernobyl accident

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the accident at Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Usually this event and the day on which the tragedy happened, is filled with sadness, sorrow, pain and bitter reminiscences. A lot of people still endure lessons from this accident that is the biggest of its kind in the history of nuclear power energy and suffer the consequences.

Mrs. Francoise Kuenzi, deputy editor-in-chief of two Swiss newspapers L'Express and L'Impartial addressed to Green Cross Switzerland and Green Cross Ukraine and asked to help in organizing of the visit to Ukraine for their journalist Yann Hulmann. The purpose of his trip is to write articles to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Green Cross Ukraine jointly with Ukrainian partners and Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine managed to organize this trip. It took place from 6 to 12 February. Yann Hulmann arrived in Ukraine together with geologist, Dr. Romain Ducommun. According to the developed agenda we visited Slavutych, the orphanage, SOCMED projects and those of Chernobyl Recovery and Development Programme. We visited the Chernobyl NPP and Pripyat.

We made a trip to Zhytomyr region, in Nevgody village, where first resettled families live. In addition, we visited families who are the beneficiaries of the projects under SOCMED international program and visited Zhytomyr Regional Children's Hospital, where two GCU projects are implemented, i.e. Health for the Future and Caries Prevention. In Kiev, we arranged for Swiss guests the meeting with Angelina Neagu, scientist, MD, Professor and Chief Editor of International Journal of Radiation Medicine, President of the Association of Physicians of Chernobyl. Then, SDC in Ukraine arranged a meeting at the Association of Chernobyl liquidators.

Journalist Yann Hulmann was very touched and grateful for Green Cross Switzerland and Green Cross Ukraine for organizing such a visit and also for the help in arranging meetings with families, immigrants who are affected by the Chernobyl disaster.

We suppose that the visit of guests from Switzerland was successful. At this moment, we know that articles are being preparing, and we look forward to their release. We are confident that all readers of L'Express and L'Impartial newspapers will not remain indifferent to the problems that exist in Ukraine.
