Water resources require protection

Constant growth of population in the world and extreme weather events make water problems global.  Today nearly fifth part of all people (about 1,2 billions) live  in water scarce regions. Water stress brings to the whole complex of economic, social and political problems that can undermine world stability and cause global blows as the results of water deficiency are poor crop and famine. The situation in the Horn of Africa (territory in northeast of Africa) where population suffer severe droughts illustrates that countries have to  cooperate in solving this problem and act immediately.

Water stress brings to the whole complex of economic, social and political problems that can undermine world stability and cause global blows as the results of water deficiency are poor crop and famine. The situation in the Horn of Africa (territory in northeast of Africa) where population suffer severe droughts illustrates that threats to global security and social justice of the global water crisis are upon us and countries have to  cooperate to solve this problem and act immediately.

On 26 August Green Cross International marking  closing of the annual World Water Week  forum in Stockholm, Sweden, urged all countries to ratify the UN Watercourses Convention. This convention is the only global legal instrument governing the use, management and protection of the world’s 276 trans-boundary watercourses. Thirty-five countries must ratify the UN Watercourses Convention for it to come into force. The main purpose of this Convention is to strengthen national legal measures to secure and guarantee ecologically sustainable governance of international watercourses. Currently 24 countries, including most recently Burkina Faso, Morocco and France, have ratified the UN Watercourses Convention. To read more information, please click here:
