International SOCMED program pursues implementing activities in the 3rd and 4th Chernobyl zones in Ukraine

Green Cross pursues to work actively in the regions of Ukraine, in particular in the city of Slavutych and the surrounding villages, where it helps to solve a number of social and health problems with families, who live in the 3rd and 4th Chernobyl zones. Many families are members of the "Mother and Child" club and have the opportunity to participate in the project "Social Cooperatives", as well as receive support under the Family Program within the International Program SOCMED.

Recently another family who has the status of victims of the Chernobyl accident received the long-awaited aid. Green Cross began working with the family of Alla Lutchenko in a hard time for the family, when they learned that Alla lost her job. Also, the mother was in despair after both sons found hyperplasia of the thyroid gland and gastritis. There was no time or opportunity to undergo additional medical examinations and to take measures to strengthen the health of her children. Green Cross took care of everything. Since then, the family is an active member at the meetings of the "Mother and Child" club. In 2015, the family received the opportunity to develop mini rabbit farm within the project "Social Cooperatives."

Cooperation with Zhytomyr Regional State Administration and Department on Family and Youth Affairs

March 3, the meeting of the board of the Department on Family, Youth and Sports Affairs of the Zhytomyr Regional State Administration took place in Zhytomyr, where the results of work in the field of family, youth and gender policies, as well as other issues related to the rehabilitation of children and families were discussed and summed up. Yuriy Sapiga, Chairman of the Board of Green Cross Ukraine, Coordinator of the International SOCMED program was invited and participated in the meeting.

Dialogue with local authorities and civil society on the environment and health in Ukraine

Through coordination and financial support of Green Cross Switzerland within the International SOCMED Program in Ukraine activities are successfully implemented and projects keep being carried out to provide assistance to the most vulnerable people. Since the beginning of the new year working visits were carried out in the regions, cooperation contracts with new partners were signed to be able to continue work.

Grateful villagers in Nevgody

There was working visit of the Green Cross Ukraine Team together with representatives of South Korea, photographer Jung. Sung-Tae and his assistant Jeon Hwalgi, who are currently working on the photo project to showcase the theme of the Chernobyl disaster and its impact on the lives of ordinary people living in the 3rd and 4th Chernobyl zones and who were displaced after the accident.

The visit was organized and coordinated by the representative of Green Cross in Ukraine and partners in Ovruch district, the head of the village council in Nevgody and Nelia Palamarchuk, Project Coordinator in Zhytomyr.

Field visit in Zhitomir region to build further cooperation

December 10, 2015 Executive Director of Green Cross Ukraine, Coordinator of the International SOCMED Programme in Ukraine Yuriy Sapiga made working visit to Zhytomyr region.

GCU team visited the Zhytomyr Oblast Children's Hospital to discuss topical issues with partners for further cooperation within the framework of the SOCMED program and expansion of the activities. Chief Doctor of the ZHOCH Viktor Marchenko, as well as doctors of the hospital, among others coordinators of Green Cross medical projects, discussed gained results and achievements as well as difficulties that have arisen for the current year while conducting planned measures and overall activities. Vitaliy Zaremba, head of the pediatric surgery department, coordinator of the "Health for the Future" project and Lyudmila Kravchenko, a pediatric dentist, coordinator of the "Caries Prevention" project provided brief information on the work. Thus, during the reporting period in 2015 medical mobile team of doctors carried out all together 14 planned visits to the districts and 10 visits that required preparatory and organizational work. Usually mobile team consists of 7-8 doctors involved (surgeon, endocrinologist, dentist, general practitioner, immunologist, gastroenterologist, neurologist, ophthalmologist). They checked 2’615 children ("Health for the Future") and 477 children ("Caries Prevention"), 3’197 children were treated ("Caries Prevention") and 684 children respectively ("Health for the Future"), committed surgical interventions - 111.

International SOCMED Program continues its activity in Ukraine. Assistance of Recreation of the Children

Thanks to the new collaboration of Green Cross Ukraine (GCU) with new partners from the children’s holiday center «Kinderdorf Senti» in Hungary, who expressed solidarity and took the charitable initiative of rendering help for the children, who are forced migrants from Donetsk and Lugansk regions and live temporary in Zhytomyr region, coordination of Maria Vitagliano (GCCH), Dieter von Deichman and support of the local partners from Department of Family, Youth and Sport of Zhytomyr Regional State Administration, the first joint project of rehabilitation and health recreation, and improvement of psychological and emotional state of the children in the camp «Kinderdorf Senti» on the northern shore of Lake Balaton in Hungary.

The Chernobyl disaster 29 years after

April 26, 2015 were 29 years after the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which went down in the history of Ukraine as one of the worst tragedies, which consequences will affect the lives of more than one generation of people around the world.

At night of April 26, at 00.23 Yuriy Sapiga, Teams of Green Cross Ukraine and Green Cross Belarus, as well as visitors, volunteers, members of the Forum, liquidators and residents laid flowers at the memorial to the Heroes of Chernobyl. Thus, they expressed their solidarity and respect to liquidators, who gave their lives during the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant for the sake of humanity.
