Green Cross energy saving action

February 14 Green Cross Ukraine (GCU) and the National Ecology and Nature Center (NENC) joined the «M'ILLUMINO DI MENO» energysavingcampaign initiated by Green Cross Italy together with the Italian public radio network CaterpillarRAI. This broad campaign is aimedat encouraging people around the world to turn off their electric devices for 60 minutes and motivating people to reduce energy consumption and boost environmental protection.

International Social and Medical Care Program (SOCMED) in Ukraine

The SOCMED program has been implementing in Ukraine since 2000, and theretofore it has been successfully carried out in the Zhytomyr region, Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky and Bila Tserkva areas, in Slavutych and in Donetsk region, mainly in Gorlovka.

We are about to expand the SOCMED program and integrate it in Chernigov and Cherkassy regions. Due to outreach activityof the program, namelyenhancement of medical module, we will manage to conduct medical examinations of children and provide guidance to parents on prevention measures and treatment of their children. Development of the program is essential based on the numerous appeals of the district administration, medical facilities and most residents of Chernigov and Cherkassy regions. We believe that joint activity and cooperation with public institutions, administration, social services, medical facilities, and civil society will focus on achieving the best results and facilitate rendering assistance to the population in need.

On the way to develop water solidarity system in Ovruch district of Zhytomyr Oblast in Ukraine

On Dec. 19 there was round table discussion arranged at the National Ecology and Nature Center in Kyiv. It was aimed at negotiating and proceeding possible cooperation within implementation of social projects between Ovruch Regional State Administration and national ecological organization Green Cross Ukraine (GCU).

Chairman of the Board, Executive Director (GCU) Yuriy S. Sapiga opened the meeting and welcomed the participants. The roundtable meeting was attended by: Vasily Nalapiy – Chairman of the Ovruch District Council, Anatoliy Bibko - Deputy Chairman of the Regional State Administration, Nikolai Levkovskiy – Head of the Pershotravneve village council, Yuriy Boiko - hygienist of the Ovruch District Sanitary Epidemiological Station, Yuriy Mogilevets - Head of the Sholomky village council, Dmitriy Krakovich - Kiev International Institute of Sociology, Olga Yurchenko - water engineer, LLC "Integrated Water Technologies", Tetyana Іschenko - coordinator at Green Cross of Ukraine (GCU), Dmitriy Sapiga - technical and information support at Green Cross Ukraine (GCU).

Ten most polluted places 2013

Green Cross Switzerland in cooperation with the US-based Blacksmith Institute has issued its annual report on the world's worst pollution problems, focusing in 2013 on the planet’s 10 most polluted places. These 10 sites are spread over eight countries.

The latest report shows that the health effects caused by environmental toxins can be equated to some of the most dangerous illnesses worldwide and even surpass them, threatening millions of lives. The World Health Organization estimates that 20% of deaths in developing countries are directly caused by environmental effects. It is also believed that almost one-fifth of cancer diseases worldwide are linked to environmental toxins. This conspicuously high percentage of assignable cancer deaths is even higher in developing countries. Pollution problems threaten the health of 200 million people worldwide.

Green Cross, Ukraine forge renewable energy agreement

Green Cross International (GCI) and Ukraine's Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry have joined forces to promote renewable energy in the Eastern European country, agreeing to create a high-powered commission that will foster innovation, collaboration and technology sharing.

GREEN CROSS ANNIVERSARY

In early September of this year, the whole Geneva became a place where every corner narrated to residents and visitors about upcoming events of Green Cross. Celebrations devoted to the 20th anniversary of Green Cross officially launched on September 2. The Mont Blanc bridge was decorated with the Green Cross flags, which fluttered in the wind. The famous JeJet d'Eau turned green. The first and one of the most important events of the day was Green Cross General Assembly. The meeting was held at the International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG). During the meeting the delegates discussed the achievements of GREEN CROSS, as well as new activities that Mikhail Gorbachev, Founding President of GCI focused on.

Ecological Camp 2013

Thanks to long-standing and fruitful collaboration between Green Cross Ukraine (GCU) with its partner Green Cross Switzerland (GCCH) and new partners who made charitable initiative and provided assistance for the implementation of the project "Ecological Summer Therapy Camp" that enabled to more effectively carry out a medical unit within the international SOCMED program. The staff of the Kiev boutique ISAIA led by Oleg Ryzhov supported our project in the most difficult period.

Green Cross: successful completion of the first project in Nevgody.

Pilot project Smart Water for Green Schools (SWGS) is finished in Nevgody. It lasted seven months, from January to July this year. This time was enough for its logical end, because everything was done fast, qualitatively and efficiently. The Nevgody villagers and local school children have really felt the benefits of the project in practice.
