Rio de Janeiro: Political leaders attending the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development have failed to meet the pressing environmental and social challenges that the world faces today, according to Green Cross International President Alexander Likhotal.
“Rio+20 demonstrated a disappointing lack of leadership,” says Mr Likhotal. “The outcome document is grossly lacking in concrete action.”
“Rio+20 represented a unique possibility for the world, but what started as a zero draft outcome document has seemingly evolved into a zero result statement by today’s end of the conference.”

GENEVA – Like a modern-day Pompeii, the streets and buildings of Prypyat stand frozen by a disaster. But, unlike the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago, Prypyat was destroyed by a manmade – and thus preventable – catastrophe.
Weeds and grey desolation are all that thrive in this once-bustling community, which housed the workers of Chernobyl’s doomed nuclear power plant, whose devastating meltdown 26 years ago still inflicts physical and socioeconomic harm on many in Ukraine and nearby countries. Back then, the world was, for an instant, shocked by the folly of nuclear technology. But, as with Hiroshima, Three Mile Island, and last year’s Fukushima meltdown in Japan, the spike in global dismay was all too fleeting.
Green Cross Ukraine with the assistance of Green Cross Switzerland in effective cooperation with Zhytomyr Regional Children's Hospital has been implementing within SOCMED Program Health for the Future and Caries Prevention projects in Zhytomyr region for already seven years. The sponsor’s support and understanding of the problems that occur in providing qualitative medical assistance to the children and adults who live in the areas affected by the Chernobyl catastrophe, enables the improvement of health and daily life of many families

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn met with the delegates of the environmental organization Green Cross International headed by its President Alexander Likhotal.

However, the head of the parliament said that "the world has quickly forgotten" about the Chernobyl problem, while the foreign partners have not fulfilled all their obligations yet.
26 years passed after the major nuclear technological disaster – Chernobyl accident. The territories resided at present by over 1.4 million people were exposed to great doses of radiation. Despite the fact that long time has passed since the day of the tragedy, more than one generation of people may feel and suffer its consequences.

Today on March 22, 2012 the international community is officially marking World Water Day, the main objective of which is to inform the general public about the significance of water resources and to attract public and policy makers’ attention to the water problems.
The UN experts made a conclusion that over 20% of the population (1 billion 400 million people) lack water suitable for drinking and irrigation of crops. About 2.5 billion people lack basic sanitation services. In many countries water shortage and pollution cause major public health problems, curb development and harm ecosystems. Access to safe drinking water in Africa remains to be very difficult. Growth of population, urbanization, change of food, depletion of soil and water, increasing energy costs, climate change are the factors that threaten security in the world.
