Constant growth of population in the world and extreme weather events make water problems global. Today nearly fifth part of all people (about 1,2 billions) live in water scarce regions. Water stress brings to the whole complex of economic, social and political problems that can undermine world stability and cause global blows as the results of water deficiency are poor crop and famine. The situation in the Horn of Africa (territory in northeast of Africa) where population suffer severe droughts illustrates that countries have to cooperate in solving this problem and act immediately.
On July 17, 2011 international youth camp «Meeting the World: Swiss Youth Camp» was launched. Green Cross Switzerland was the organizer of the camp. It was implemented due to partial financing by the EU exchange programme Youth in Action. It enabled to realize and conduct the camp for children and young people. There were representatives from Italy (Palermo), Switzerland, as well as children and young people from Russia, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, which suffered from the Chernobyl accident.
This year Green Cross Ukraine organization together with its partner National Ecological and Naturalistic Center for pupils and students under the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports organized the "International Youth Eco-Camp" for children. There were 220 children, who took part in this camp. It was delegations from all regions of Ukraine, children from Russia, Belarus, Moldova.
The large family of Valentina Grinik lives in Zhytomyr oblast’, the third Chernobyl zone, in radioactively contaminated territory of Ovrutsk region in Ignatpil village. Mother brings up three little children alone and she worries much about their health as children are often ill, they have problems with thyroid glands, lungs and bronchi, cardiovascular system, complain of rheumatism.
Another family has become the beneficiaries of Green Cross, who received social assistance under the international program Socmed and projects Mother and Child cluband Social Cooperatives.
Since last year, the family of Tatiana Lutsky (29) is a member of Mother and Child club in Zhytomyr region.
Such pictures remind us of the past, that there was a tragedy 25 years ago, a global catastrophe - an explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Significant part of territories was affected in many countries both in Europe and former Soviet republics. Residents of these countries were exposed to live under threat. They suffered a series of economic, social and health problems.
All this time we overcome the consequences of the accident. Today, we see that we still have much to do. Unfortunately, the majority of scientific facts and findings reported disappointing developments in the future. Every time we are dealing with an invisible threat that may become our reality anytime.
Summer is a season of vocations and active rest. It is the season of bright emotions and unforgettable impressions, especially, if these holidays have right organization and are aimed at improvement of health and mood. Unfortunately, today not all Ukrainians can provide proper rest for themselves or their children owing to unfavorable economic circumstances, increase in prices for tours to summer camps and health resorts. Socially vulnerable groups are the most restricted in this regard.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the accident at Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Usually this event and the day on which the tragedy happened, is filled with sadness, sorrow, pain and bitter reminiscences. A lot of people still endure lessons from this accident that is the biggest of its kind in the history of nuclear power energy and suffer the consequences.
Under SOCMED international program, Green Cross project Social cooperatives: mini rabbit farm is implemented. It is aimed at helping rural communities, teaching villagers new technologies in growing rabbits and meat production and as a result of it the revival of the Ukrainian village.
